Matt Crowell is a Welsh midfielder who was born in Bridgend, Wales on 3rd July 1984. Crowell began his youth career at Swansea, but was snapped up by Southampton at the age of 16 in 2000. The move came about through Malcolm Elias, who had left his role as youth development officer at The Vetch to take up a similar position at St Mary's. Crowell joined Saints for an initial fee of £100,000 as set by a tribunal. A 20% sell on clause was included, and Swansea would have pocketed a further £100,000 for every 10 appearances (up to 50). Crowell failed break through to the first team before his 2003 release however.
After an unsuccessful trial at Bristol Rovers, Crowell joined Wrexham in 2003. The Welshman made a reasonably decent start at the Racecourse Ground, playing alongside the likes of Darren Ferguson and Ben Foster. Crowell made 18 appearances during 2003/04 as Wrexham achieved a respectable 13th place League 1 finish. His first goal came in a 3-0 win over Grimsby on 6th March 2004. In 2004/05 Crowell helped the Red Dragons to a Football League Trophy victory. He played in the 2-0 final win over Southend on 10th April 2005. Wrexham were also relegated to League 2 that season, but Crowell remained at the club for a further three campaigns. His final two years were interrupted by injury. Crowell was sent off in his final appearance for the club, a 3-0 defeat at Rotherham on 22nd December 2007.
In January 2008 Crowell joined Northwich. He enjoyed a good early spell at the Conference club, netting his first goal in a 4-0 win over Farsley on 22nd March 2008. Crowell was a virtual ever present for Northwich during 2008/09. He scored a memorable last minute winner at Oxford on 26th April 2009, his final game for The Trickies.
Crowell joined Altrincham on a short term basis in July 2009. Shortly after bagging a goal in a 3-0 win at Barrow the former Saints man was on the move again. He moved to Australia, signing for Central Coast Mariners. Crowell returned to England in 2010 for short spells with Farnborough and Altrincham again.
Crowell had a brief stint in China with Chengdu Blades in 2011, before signing with Welsh club Port Talbot Town the same year. In September 2011 he moved to Spanish minnows CD Ourense.
