Oriol Romeu is a Spanish central midfielder who was born in Ulldecona, Spain on 24th September 1991. Romeu played in Espanyol's youth academy as a child, before making the switch to city rivals Barcelona in 2004. By 2008/09 the player had made his breakthrough into the Catalan club's B side. Pep Guardiola handed him his first team debut in December 2009 in a friendly against Kazma of Kuwait. Romeu was linked with a loan move to Stoke City and was beginning to be touted as one of the hottest prospects in Europe. He made the squad for the 2009 FIFA World Club Cup without making an appearance. He continued to perform well at B team level before finally making his competitive debut in August 2010, a Super Cup defeat to Sevilla. His one and only league appearance for Barcelona came on 15th May 2011, a 0-0 draw with Deportivo at the Nou Camp after Barca had already wrapped up the title.
During the summer of 2011 Romeu represented Spain at the U20 World Cup. La Furia Roja perhaps underachieved slightly in only reaching the quarter-finals. Shortly after the conclusion of the tournament Romeu moved to Chelsea for €5m. Barcelona included a first refusal clause in the deal. Romeu made his Chelsea debut as a substitute for Nicolas Anelka in a 2-1 win at Sunderland on September 10th. The Spaniard enjoyed a reasonable first campaign at Stamford Bridge, making 24 appearances in all competitions. He appeared less frequently towards the end of 2011/12, as Andre Villas Boas was replaced by Roberto Di Matteo.
Romeu featured in a few Chelsea matches during the first few months of the 2012/13. Rafa Benitez was said to have been a fan of the midfielder, but after just a couple of weeks under the interim manager the player would suffer a knee injury against Sunderland which would rule him out for the remainder of the season.
Romeu moved to Valencia on loan for the 2013/14 campaign. He was unable to hold down a regular starting berth and had his season interrupted by injury. Romeu helped Valencia to a famous 3-2 win at former club Barcelona on 1st February 2014.
In 2014/15 Romeu joined Stuttgart. The former Barca man had an unremarkable stint in Germany, with Stuttgart barely surviving in the Bundesliga. He made 27 appearances, 7 of which came from the bench.
Romeu signed for Southampton on 12th August 2015. The player signed a three year contract for £5,000,000. He made a solid debut as a half-time substitute in the 3-0 loss to Everton on August 15th.
