Saints completed their pre season programme on Saturday, with a 2-2 draw at League 1 outfit Yeovil. The hosts took an extremely physical approach to the game despite the fact it was only a friendly. Dan Harding went down in pain early on after a rash challenge, but was lucky enough to come away unscathed. Nigel Adkins's side had the best chances of the first half, and took the lead through David Connolly just before the break after a pass from a Rickie Lambert free kick. It looked like Lambert was setting up to shoot, but instead he placed a through ball to Connolly, who calmly finished past Yeovil keeper Steer. Yeovil made it 1-1 from the spot, just like they had done in the league contest last season. Paul Wotton playing against his former club scored the penalty. Jonathan Forte scored a terrific goal after a fine bursting run through the Yeovil defence. Andy Williams quickly equalised for Yeovil with a header, which completed the scoring.
Not a bad game for friendly standards, at the end of a fairly productive pre season. We may have only picked up a single win, but our performances indicated we have a lot to be confident about for the upcoming campaign. Probably the most important thing is that we go into the start of the season virtually injury free. At the time of writing, only Alex Chamberlain is a doubt for next weekend's match with Leeds. Contrast that to last season when half our regular starters were either injured or out of shape. I thought the best individual performances at Huish Park today came from Guly, Cork and Schneiderlin. Danny Butterfield also looked decent, linking up well with Guly on the right. Jonathan Forte proved he has something to offer today. He scored a great goal and was a threat with his pace. There's been a lot of talk about bringing in a new forward, but maybe we don't need one with Forte in this type of form?
